What Is Pet Insurance and Why Do I Need It?

Like human health insurance, pet insurance reduces the costs of medical bills, usually by a set percentage after a yearly deductible has been paid based on the services or treatments rendered.

Unlike human health insurance, pet insurance isn’t networked and usually reimburses the owner after the bill is paid rather than immediately reducing the cost at the point services are rendered.

We hope our pets never get sick or require surgery, but any pet owner knows that it’s probable that their pet will need some type of veterinary treatment in their lifetime. Would you be able to pay the vet’s bills if your pet suddenly got sick? Insurance can be a vital part of planning for the future.

How Does Embrace Work?

Embrace Pet Insurance offers an accident and illness policy for cats and dogs 14 years of age and younger and an accident-only plan for pets over 14 years of age. After signing up, Embrace will not reject a pet’s coverage due to age, and some circumstances even allow the insurance to pass to another owner.

If your pet requires medical treatment, you can take your pet to any veterinarian as the bill is paid to the veterinarian first and then submitted for reimbursement. Payout is based on the policy you’ve purchased and the type of service. Deductibles will vary, but once the deductible is paid, the policy can reimburse up to 90% of the vet costs.

Through Embrace, purchasing an insurance plan also benefits charity as they pass $2 of each new policy onto an animal charity.

What Is Covered and Excluded?

Embrace has two standard plans, one that covers accidents and illness for dogs and cats under the age of 14 and a separate one that covers accidents only for pets 14+ years of age.

Covered services include but are not limited to:

  • Emergency and diagnostic treatments, including exam fees
  • Hospitalization and surgery, including anesthesia and specialist care
  • Dental illnesses and surgery
  • Breed-specific and genetic specific conditions such as hip dysplasia and allergies
  • Chronic illness treatment
  • Alternative therapies and rehabilitation
  • Prosthetics and mobility devices and treatments
  • Behavioral therapy

Like most insurance policies, pre-existing conditions are not covered by pet insurance. A benefit Embrace offers is that they evaluate pre-existing conditions based on the pet’s medical records. If curable illnesses have occurred and then cleared with no symptoms for 12 months, the illness may be eligible for coverage in the future.

Exclusions for coverage include items often excluded from other pet insurance policies, such as:

  • Cosmetic procedures such as declawing, tail docking and ear cropping unless medically necessary.
  • Routine veterinary care (including vaccines, flea/tick/heartworm preventatives, regular exams, spay/neuter surgery, etc.)
  • Anything related to pregnancy
  • DNA testing and cloning

The website lists a full list of exclusions and support services that can tell you if a specific service is eligible.

How Much Does Embrace Cost?

Wellness Rewards

Wellness Rewards addresses some routine care costs not included in the pet insurance policies. Paying into this program covers a portion of routine veterinary services, including spay/neuter surgery, vaccines, grooming, teeth cleaning, and flea, tick & heartworm preventative.

Wellness programs can be especially beneficial for new puppy or kitten owners who may not have high vet bills because of accidents or illness but require coverage for recurring routine services. Young pets will often have to visit the vet for preventative treatment multiple times during their first year of life for foundation vaccines and boosters.

Factors affecting monthly premiums include age, breed of dog or cat, medical history and the percentage of coverage required. A policy that pays out 80% of eligible services’ cost will cost more per month than a plan that only covers 60%.

These quotes are reviewed individually alongside your pet’s medical records so the individual quote can accurately gauge the coverage available to your pet.

However, there are discounts available to pet owners, such as military discounts and 10% off if you insure more than one pet at a time. Inquire about these discounts during the quote process.

Embrace also offers a feature called Diminishing Deductible. Each year your pet isn’t sick and the insurance plan unused, the deductible decreases by $50, thus rewarding owners who continue to insure their pet even when the pet is healthy.

Claims and Service

Submitting a claim can be done through their app MyEmbrace, by email, fax, or mail. Submitting outside the portal requires a claim report in addition to documentation, so it’s most convenient to use their app. Each claim must include invoices provided by the vet for coverage.

Claims take 10-12 days on average, and then a refund is delivered by check or direct deposit.

Support is available in many forms, including email, phone, and chat. The website also offers many in-depth FAQs on nearly every topic from the claims process to coverage and exclusions.

Embrace offers a pet insurance policy that covers many of the everyday pet owner’s concerns while donating to pet-related charities, which is a bonus.

While the website is full of information, and it’s helpful to see exclusions and coverage printed out in the open instead of hidden in small print, it would be nice to know their pricing. Their comparison charts between Embrace and other leading pet insurance providers are helpful but are too broad and general. That being said, you can always request a quote.

Embrace offers a service that many pet owners can benefit from, but do your research to ensure that their policies align with your lifestyle and budget.
